Getting Started

This Page will guide you through the steps necessary to register for and take a NetMath course.

Before You Register

There are a few tasks you should complete before registering for a NetMath course.

Please visit our Course Software page to make sure your computer can run the required software. Download or purchase the software and make sure you know how to use it before you begin your NetMath course. Our Help page contains tutorials that will assist you with using the software.

Read about the course you are interested in taking on our Courses page. Make sure you meet the prerequisites and are familiar with required concepts if your course lists them.

Visit the NetMath Registration page hosted by Academic Outreach. This is where you will find information about tuition, extensions, and our drop/refund policy.

You will also need to arrange for a proctor who will administer your exams. More information may be found on Testing and Proctors page at Academic Outreach.

NetMath Mentors

Once you enroll in a class, you will be assigned a mentor. Send your mentor an e-mail each week so they can keep track of your progress. You should expect to receive a response within a day.

If you need more immediate assistance during your course, we have mentors on duty during most business hours (schedule).

  • email: netmathmentor@gmail.com
  • IRC chatroom: join #netmath on marvin.math.uiuc.edu using port 7000
  • phone: (217) 244-5446

Assignments

If you have never taken one of our courses before, your first assignment will be to read the NetMath student guide and to complete the pre-assignment.

The pre-assignment is a way of making sure that you have Mathematica running and are able to use it with the courseware. If you have gone through the other materials on this page, it will be a breeze, and you will be more than ready to dive into the lessons.

The NetMath courses are self-paced. However, you should be able to average one assignment per week. If you are, for any reason, unable to complete or submit homework assignments, contact your mentor as soon as possible.

Remember to send your mentor an email every week, even if you haven’t made much progress. It is very important to let your mentor know whether you are on track to complete the course.

Quizzes

Most of our courses have online quizzes that reinforce the material covered by the homework. These quizzes are run through an online program called Mallard. Most lessons have an associated quiz which covers the concepts from the literacy sheets. We recommend that you take your quiz soon after completing your homework.

The courses with quizzes are:

Exams

Most NetMath classes have two tests and a final exam. Before you take an exam, complete the literacy sheets and quizzes for the lessons covered by the exam. These will help you be sure that you understand the concepts that will be on the test. Understanding these concepts is essential if you want to do well on the exam. If you have any questions, contact your mentor or visit the online chat.
